Israeli Airstrikes Target Military Infrastructure In Syria

According to Punch Newspaper, Israel has launched airstrikes targeting military infrastructure within Syria, amid the ongoing war against Hamas.

The Israeli military confirmed an operation. They stated an IDF fighter jet recently attacked launchers used for attacks on Israeli territory. The airstrikes targeted Syrian military infrastructure, as per the official statement.

While the Israeli army did not provide detailed information about the operation, Israeli public broadcaster Kan News reported that the strikes occurred in proximity to the southern Syrian city of Daraa. Syria’s defense ministry also confirmed the strikes, stating that they occurred at approximately 1:35 am (2335 GMT) “from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan,” and targeted two positions of their armed forces in the Daraa countryside, resulting in some material losses.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, reported that the Israeli airstrikes focused on army positions, including an artillery battalion, in Daraa province. These airstrikes were believed to be in response to shelling originating from the nearby occupied Golan Heights.

These developments come amid growing concerns regarding the regional implications of Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. In recent weeks, there have been a series of attacks on U.S. forces in both Iraq and Syria. Additionally, there has been an escalation in exchanges of fire between Hezbollah and Israeli forces along the Lebanon-Israel border since the commencement of the Gaza conflict.

Late Sunday, the Israeli military struck “Hezbollah terrorist targets in Lebanon” in response to rocket fire. Cross-border clashes with Hezbollah have become frequent since October 7 when Hamas militants infiltrated southern Israel, causing casualties and hostage-taking.

In response to the Hamas attack, Israel heavily bombed Gaza, resulting in a significant number of casualties. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, the conflict has claimed over 8,000 lives, with nearly half being children.

Since the initial Hamas attack, cross-border violence spilled into Lebanon, causing at least 61 reported deaths. The casualties include mostly Hezbollah fighters and some civilians, including a journalist. Israeli officials reported four deaths, one of which was a civilian.

Amid escalating tensions, global mediation efforts to seek peaceful resolutions are a top priority. Close monitoring aims to prevent security deterioration in the Middle East.
