Gov. Fubara sets new record, approves long-abandoned Rivers’ Grant

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has approved the release of over N300 million as Residency Training Grants. This funding will benefit 389 medical doctors in the state’s civil service currently in residency training.

The was confirmed on the official X handle of the Rivers State Ministry of Health.

The funds cover two years, 2023 and 2024, with payments ranging from N800,000 to N900,000 per doctor each year. In 2023, 215 resident doctors received funding, and 174 doctors have already received grants for 2024.

With this milestone, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has set a new record in healthcare funding as Residency Training Grant has only been paid twice in the past 16 years, with the last payment made six years ago, in 2018.

By ensuring this funding, Governor Fubara reaffirms his administration’s commitment to supporting doctors’ professional development. This initiative prevents the frustration of residency training due to financial constraints, offering essential incentives to healthcare personnel.

Governor Fubara views residency training support as a strategic investment in enhancing healthcare capacity. This initiative aims to improve healthcare services for all residents and businesses in Rivers State.

In approving the release, Governor Fubara expressed his belief that this support will motivate doctors to excel in their residency training. Residency training is vital for acquiring competencies necessary for providing top-notch healthcare while serving the state.

Key components of residency training include update courses, which enhance doctors’ ability to tackle health challenges. The funding also covers research costs, ensuring doctors can present proposals and dissertations without financial hindrance.

Additionally, the grant covers transportation for doctors attending update courses and exams, which are often held outside the state or country. Examination fees for Parts One and Two of the Residency exams are also included, removing financial barriers to career advancement.

Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the Honourable Commissioner for Health in Rivers State, praised Governor Fubara for prioritizing healthcare personnel’s welfare. She highlighted the governor’s proactive approach to addressing issues hindering human capacity development.
