Rivers Assembly Votes To Override Gov. Fubara And Pass 4 New Bills Into Law

The Rivers State House of Assembly has reportedly voted to bypass Governor Siminalayi Fubara and pass four new bills into law.

This happened during a sitting held on Friday, January 26, 2024, at the Assembly quarters.

The Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, had read four letters sent to him by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

In the letter, he refused to sign the four new bills that were sent to him. The in-house voting took place afterwards.

The House relied on section 100, subsection 5, affirming that the governor’s assent is not required for the passage of the bills.

The 4 Laws passed are:

1-The Rivers Local Government Amendment Law.

2-The Rivers State Traditional Rulers Amendment Law.

3-The Rivers State Advertisement and Use of State Owned Property Prohibition repeal law.

4- The Rivers State Funds Management and Financial Autonomy Law.

Additionally, the Speaker alleged that the governor does not want to conduct local government elections in Rivers State.
